Why Crossee exists

I play the NYT Mini and Midi most mornings. They are good puzzles. But the clues assume an American childhood — a sitcom that ran before I was born, a baseball team, a brand of cereal in an aisle I have never walked down. You cannot solve what you have never heard of, and looking it up is not solving; it is admitting the puzzle was not written for you. My partner had the same complaint in the same week, which is usually the sign that a thing is worth building.

So: the same shape of puzzle, built out of India. Dhoni behind the stumps. The jingle you can still sing. The film line everyone quotes. The dish people argue about the correct way to make. Nothing obscure, nothing that needs a search — if you grew up in India, or grew up around it, you already know it.

What it is

• A 9×9 grid — a mini, not a Sunday epic. Ten minutes, usually less.
• A new one every morning at 5 AM, free, no sign-up, no app to install.
• Clues written by hand. The grid is filled by a program, from a word list built for this; the wording is not.
• Sign in only if you want your progress to follow you between phone and laptop.

Meant to be easy

This is not a test. It is the thing you do while the coffee cools — light enough to finish, and close enough to home that finishing feels like something you knew rather than something you looked up. If a clue ever sends you to Google, that is a clue I got wrong.
